Lessons from the Past
I was recently given an article that was published in Utica on April 6, 1912. I am not sure of the publication. The article contains the “Report of the Organization Committee for the Boy Scouts of America” and describes a meeting that took place on December 4, 1911 to officially organize the council. The meeting was attended by 30 community leaders and Chief Scout Ernest Thompson Seton. I found the following passages especially interesting, I hope you will also:
“”When we take into consideration the fact, as stated by Chief Scout Ernest Thompson Seton, that we represent more Scouts in proportion to population than any other council in the United States, the mere object of the preservation of our units is reason enough for a permanent, businesslike and efficient organization.”
“….that such a plan will give to the units in the council the feeling that no unit can lower its ideal without weakening the chain in which that unit has the privilege of becoming one of the strongest links”
“in union there is strength”
Three very powerful passages from our past that serve as good lessons today! How can we recapture some of these ideals so that we can represent more Scouts in proportion to our population?
100th Anniversary Council Shoulder Patch
As we move ever closer to the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts, our council would like to commission a commemorative CSP. We believe the best way to accomplish this would be to offer a design contest open to all registered youth in our council. The details:
1-The patch should celebrate our history while looking toward the future.
2-The patch must include “Boy Scouts of America” and “Revolutionary Trails
Council”-preferably in that order
3-The patch must include a fleur-de-lis.
4-The patch must be the same size as our current patch.
5-Deadline for submission will be September 30, 2009
The Council Key 3 will organize a selection committee to pick the winning design and the patches will be available for purchase by December 15, 2009. The winning participant will be recognized on the front cover of the Spring 2010 Scouting News and will earn a $500 Visa Gift Card!
Scout Executive’s Recruiter’s Recognition
I have mentioned, in my blogs and elsewhere, that engaging qualified volunteers is the key to our success in the future. I am happy to include a new recognition for volunteers that distinguish themselves in recruiting and training volunteers. Please see the attachment. Hopefully, we can have a little fun with this very important topic. Remember, help with recruiting volunteers is available. All you have to do is ask. Here are some tips to get you started:
· Identify the positions you need to fill
· List the attributes needed for each position
· Identify individuals that have the attributes
· Schedule a personal meeting with the prospect. Take someone the prospect respects.
· Ask for their involvement. Provide a specific position description.
· Be silent and let them answer.
· If they say no…make sure they don’t need more information. If it’s still a “no”, move on-it happens more often that a “yes”
· Until you become a good “prospector” and “recruiter”, you may have to ask up to 8 people to get a “yes”
· If they say “yes”, get them trained, engaged, and supported immediately.
I look forward to a great summer and I hope to see you at camp!
